In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto He means that we should eat things that our great-grandmothers would have recognized as food, whole, unadulterated, relatively un-processed products of farms and seas and fields.
South Beach Cereal Bars are decidedly not what he had in mind. The ingredient list could not be read aloud in one breath. Or two. It contains things that sound bizzare (fractionated palm kernel oil) or frightening (Invert Syrup).
And yet.
For the hungry weight-lifter or the person on the run, things could be a whole lot worse. How many of us, trapped in an airport or rest stop or the short pause between a workout and a return to work, eat something that is truly awful? We go for a junk burger or a bag of chips or a giant soda.
These little (35gm) bars offer ten grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber in a mere 140 calories. There's five grams of fat, two of which are saturated, to stave off hunger later on.
How do they taste? Compared to food, they're not very good. Try a nibble of real peanut butter before you eat one and you'll find the bar to be almost tasteless. Compared to other 'foods' in their category, they're quite tasty and they leave your mouth feeling uncontaminated with a toasty sort of aftertaste.

That's a pretty significant difference, especially since I'm violently allergic to cashews. I will be returning these.

It has just enough flavor of cherry to not be obnoxious and has yummy big chocolate chips. They are moist and filling. I love having these as my breakfast with some coffee on the way to work. They are healthy but really don't taste TOO healthy. I highly recommend this flavor!

(More customer reviews)These bars are a great example of a sneaky marketing ploy by a major food corporation. By using the word "Nutri" as part of the name of the product, consumers are tricked into thinking these are healthy. These should really be called CANDY-GRAIN bars! Here's the nutritional low down:
1. These bars contain 13 grams of sugar. (Notice the first ingredient in the "filling" is strawberry preserves, made of high fructose corn syrup and strawberries. The next ingredient is...corn syrup, followed by fructose, which is also a sweetener.) More sweeteners appear on down the ingredients list. Out of the 140 calories in this tiny bar, 62 calories come from sugar.
2. These bars have partially hydrogenated oil in them. That's the type of oil that contains artery clogging trans fat. Yuck.
3. They contain less than 1 gram of fiber. That means that the bars include very, very little whole grain or fruit, either of which would increase fiber content.
4. They do contain some vitamins. But these are all in the form of additives. (They are listed at the end of the ingredient list.) Essentially, they've ground up a bit of a vitamin pill into each bar. Obviously, there's no need to eat candy to get powdered vitamins. If you want the extra vitamins--just take a vitamin pill!
5. While they were at it, they added 5% DV of sodium per bar.
I am not opposed to enjoying junk food now and then. If these bars tasted great, I might indulge in one as dessert from time to time. However, there's lots of junk food I like better...so I won't bother with these bars. A better choice, for taste and nutrition, is Kashi TLC Crunchy Granola Bar - Pumpkin Spice Flax, 6 - 1.4 oz Bars, 8.4 oz or one of the other Kashi bars. Or real strawberries, of course!

The chocolate peanut butter meal replacement bars are, in my opinion the most satisfying of the 180 calorie bars Special K makes. They are chewy enough that you can enjoy it slowly, and I really feel full after eating one. I have tried a couple other varieties of the same brand, and although they taste good by diet bar standards, they do not fill me up as well and are not quite as chewy.

(More customer reviews)Although the product is convenient and the taste is good, once I was able to review the ingredients I would not have purchased this product. The second ingredient is High Fructose Corn syrup and the more troubling third ingredient is partially hydrogenated Oil or trans fat. All trans fat products, even products that show zero trans fat but have partially hydrogenated oil as an ingredient are products I don't purchase. Even trace amounts cause metabolic issues. When will food companies understand that they need to use more natural ingredients and not chemically altered ingredients? Buyers need to help send the right message and let these products sit on the shelves. It's voting with your dollar. Buyer beware.

You can buy Weight Watchers own bars and they are about one-third the size. These are satisfying and come on, they have one side that's coated in chocolate! I also like that they have plenty of fiber - five grams, and are loaded with many essential vitamins. I bought a case of these bars and am about to buy more.
