(More customer reviews)If you've never had flax seed oil before, you may notice a slightly "off" flavor to Nature's Path's version of raisin bran. I think even flax newbies will habituate to this taste, especially because of the familiar taste of the multi-grain flakes and the raisins (see other reviews). As one who sometimes puts a tablespoon of flax seed oil on top of oatmeal, the flax seed flavor was a welcome change from the usual cold cereal offerings.
THis cereal is pretty darn good for you> Obviously, you're gonna want to consult a doctor or nutritionist, and I am neither. From a lay person's pont of view, however, the 11 grams of fiber("11 WHOPPING grams," I should say--that's way more than oatmeal, and more than bran flakes or any other hot or cold cereal I've seen) 600 grams of Omegas and no saturated fat all sound very good for you. If offers 20% of the Daily Value of iron (see nutritional information below), without any added iron! Very rare. Perhaps it has to do with all those organic grains (and raisins): Organic whole wheat flour, organic wheat bran, organic oat bran, organic barley malt extract. (See below for a complete list of ingredients.)

(More customer reviews)Nature's Path is my favorite cereal brand, and OPTIMUM Blueberry is my favorite of them all.
I've been enjoying this cereal for well over 5 years.
It's organic, and full of wonderful beneficial whole grains etc. - just read the ingredients list!
It has a mixture of textures, with "twigs", "puffs", flakes, seeds and the little dried blueberries.
It's great with soy milk, dairy milk, yogurt, and even right out of the box as a snack.
I haven't bought it for awhile because it never seems to go on sale anymore, so I was thrilled to find it here on sale for $2.20 a box!
I just got my shipment from Amazon, and want to add a few notes:
While the cereal seems very fresh, I couldn't find an expiration date anywhere on the boxes.
They have changed the packaging, making it even more eco-friendly, and also slightly reformulated the cereal. The box says "Now with 25% less sugar than our previous recipe" Yay! (Don't worry, if you've had this cereal before the change, the taste is still wonderful.) So the "Nutrition Facts" have changed (not drastically) from what Amazon shows, but the fiber has dropped from 10g to 7g. The serving size is still the same at 1 cup (55g).
Here are some of the differences that may be important to you:
Calories were 190, now 200
Protein was 8g, now 9g
Total Fat was 2.5g, now 3g (Still none are saturated fat)
Total Carbs were 40g, now 38g
Fiber was 10g, now 7g (Boo!)
Sugars were 16g, now 9g (Yay!)
Sodium was 200mg, now 230mg
The cinnamon flavor is very mild, I usually add more for flavor and health benefits. I also add a small amount of walnuts (for extra EFA's, taste and crunch), or pecans. Read Update below for more additions.
Unless you are hooked on the average sickeningly-sweet, unhealthy, over-processed mainstream cereals, I think you will love this as much as I do! If you want to try a box before you buy it in bulk here, I've found it at most health food stores, Fry's / Kroger's in their health food sections, and Sprouts.
Even if you are hooked on the other stuff, give this a try, you might be pleasantly surprised. I had bought this for my parents and their verdict is: Dad loves it, Mom likes it.
Update 6/6/09: I just responded with these comments in another review, and thought they might be helpful:
I too would enjoy more berries in the cereal, but it would probably make the price astronomical, so I usually add a little of "Just Tomatoes" brand of freeze dried mixed fruit which is yummy and has a good mix of fruit - though I could do without the raisins, they're not so good freeze dried.

There is another brand that I haven't tried, but has gotten great reviews called Traverse Bay that has dried blueberries

You don't need to use a whole lot in the cereal so they last for awhile. One tip is to keep them in the freezer so they stay crunchy.

(More customer reviews)I prefer the whole grain to the ground seed. When mixed with liquid (about 2 Tablespoons of Salba to 1 cup of liquid), it forms a gel. The whole grain has the consistency of tapioca pudding; the ground salba is a bit too gritty for me, even after it gels up. Whatever form one uses (ground or whole grain), Salba (chia seed) doesn't have much flavor of it's own, so it takes on the flavor of whatever I mix with it.
I do like that it has omega-3 (which is good for my heart) and fiber (which is good for my digestion).

(More customer reviews)With age, my tummy has decided it doesn't like me very much, and this product gives me a nutritious breakfast, that fills me up and is easy on my stomach.
I enjoy this best when I soak 2 Tablespoons of the seeds in a cup of water or milk overnight. It forms into a gel by the next morning. If I've soaked it in milk, I add a tablespoon or so of Nestle's Chocolate Quick, and it tastes a little like chocolate tapioca pudding. If I've mixed it with water, I add a bit of Tang the next morning, and it tastes like a fruity-flavored slush. Sometimes, I also add shelled hemp seeds and/or cocoa nibs for a little more nutrition and flavor. When I add these extras, I also run it through the blender so I won't have to "chew" my shake.
I also like that this has lots of fiber. It doesn't have much taste on it's own, so it takes on the flavor of whatever I'm mixing it with.

(More customer reviews)I tried this product after reading research regarding the excellent nutritional value of the product - high level of omega 3, high fibre content, high calcium and iron levels in addition to its impact on glycemic levels and cholesterol. The research was conducted by St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto and was led by a professor of Medicine from the University of Toronto. After trying it out for a month, I have noticed an improvement in my energy level and surprisingly, some inadvertent weight loss. It turns out that since this product absorbs water, it acts as an appetite suppressant as well. I can't say enough about this and highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to boost energy and add nutrients to their diet. I usually add this to cereal, but have also sprinkled this onto blueberry muffin dough before baking. Surprisingly light nutty taste that does not interfere with anything I add it to. I recommend the whole seeds rather than the grain which tends to make liquids thicken up almost immediately.

The 6 pack case Amazon sent me was stale, off color & bad tasting. When I tried to return it via Amazon's online return mechanisim I was told I could not return food products & no costomer service contact was available. As a result, Amazon has my money & I have an unusable product that is past dated & stale.
