(More customer reviews)My wife buys these Fiber One bars and I started eating one per day because they taste really good (almost like a candy bar) and I assumed they were healthy since they are from Fiber 1 and have 35% of your daily fiber. In fact, I had been eating at least a couple a week for over a year now. After having some gastrointestinal issues, I checked the box of the fiber 1 bars and I was surprised to find that the first ingredient was something I'd never heard of before: "chicory root." I've read a lot about chicory root and I'm skeptical about the healthiness of these bars due to my research and my own observations having been a long time consumer. Here are my observations:
Pros:
-Good Taste
Cons:
-Will give you bad gas if consumed regularly or in large quantities. Goes away after not consuming the bars for a few days
-Has quite a few calories and sugars. It tastes like a candy bar because it almost is a candy bar.
-I periodically had painful BMs and blood in my stools when I ate these regularly. I couldn't figure out what was causing it. I attributed it to marathon training for a long time but after taking these out of my diet the problem has not returned.
-I feel a little leaner and stronger having taken these out of my diet. It could just be the drop in caloric intake.This leads me to believe that these bars probably do more harm than good to the digestive system and the body in general. It makes me sad because I really like the taste but I've got to stop eating these. I suggest doing some research on these bars and chicory root before you think about eating these regularly.
